New Work 2023
I've yet to find an appropriate space to show the paintings which I made last year, all of which address or orbit around the accident that my wife was involved in. It has been a challenge to find a suitable venue, being somewhat stymied by sensitivities around nudity and the depiction of traumatic events. I’m continuing to make related work and organise the exhibition, and in the meantime i’ve been working on lots of other new bits and pieces.
They have been made playfully around a variety of ideas rather than with a clear, overarching vision. All of a sudden the studio is full of new pieces which has really crept up on me, partly because I was focussed on other things and also because the techniques are varied and I didn’t notice the work accumulate in the usual way.
The techniques differ; Paintings, Screenprints, Cyanotypes, other experiments. Each is a thread I could pick up and develop. I’ve been photographing and cataloguing and despite the range of media they look consistent and fit well together.
In general the work is experimental and strange, weirder. I’ve made no concessions on what is appropriate, nor what is economical technically (some of the Screenprints were particularly complicated to make). There are some lighthearted works but also some confusing ideas that i’ve leant into. I'm interested to see how people respond to them all.
