The John Roan School, Greenwich

Permanent large scale artwork for new building

PXL_20210827_113051798.MP.jpg

This piece was made with Bow Arts for The John Roan - a secondary school located right on the edge of Greenwich Park in southeast London.

Over the course of two days I worked with a group of year 7’s there, thinking about how the values of the school might be pictured. The resulting design (title: Starcatchers) combines a few of their ideas; The stag, trees and forest are updated elements from the school emblem which relate to the schools’ proximity to Greenwich. The many reflected figures which connect the whole picture together symbolise limitlessness. The path they take leads to the sun and stars, in order to represent excellence, and striving towards it.

The artwork itself is made from lasercut plywood, hundreds of pieces which are primed, painting and fixed together. The piece measures 1.3 x 6.6 Metres and is now installed in the atrium of the Schools’ new building.
